The following are some common technical questions regarding CDwriter and adding a new compatible drive.

Q: I bought a new (unsupported) CD-R/W drive and want to use it with CDwriter.  What do I do?

A: This is an example using a Ricoh MP6200S CD-RW drive. It has device file /dev/dsk/c1t2d0.

First, as root and from the Unix command line, type:

cdrecord -inq dev=1,2,0

(Note that the comma-separated numbers after "dev=" correspond to the numbers in the device file.) The result is:

Cdrecord release 1.8a14 Copyright (C) 1995-1998 Jörg Schilling
TAMS changes Copyright (C) 1998-1999 A Neil.
scsidev: '1,2,0'
scsibus: 1 target: 2 lun: 0
Device type : Removable CD-ROM
Version : 2
Response Format: 2
Capabilities :
Vendor_info : 'RICOH '
Identification : 'MP6200S '
Revision : '2.20'
Device seems to be: Generic mmc CD-RW.

You now will want to edit the file "/opt/cdwriter/lib/cdwriter-drives", which contains information about all of the drive types that CDwriter knows about. In this case, you would add the line

RICOH MP6200S CD-RW 2

(before the last line, which must be "$").

The fields in this entry are

Vender_info Identification [CDROM|CD-R|CDR|CD-RW|CDRW] Max_write_speed

(Note, Max_write_speed is something that you will need to get from the literature about your drive.)

Q: TAMS has added drives to the support list since I bought CDwriter. How do I update my database of supported drives, so that I can use one of the new drives?

A: Download the latest support drive database file.
If you have CDwriter running, exit out of it. Copy it (as root) to "/opt/cdwriter/lib/cdwriter-drives".
The next time you start CDwriter, it should recognize any of the supported drives. If your drive is still not supported, please refer to the previous question "I bought a new (unsupported) CD-R/W drive and want to use it with CDwriter. What do I do?"

Q: I run cdwriter and it immediately returns to the Unix prompt without printing anything or opening any windows.

A: CDwriter will not work if you do not have "/opt/cdwriter/bin" in the executable path. If you are running (k|ba)sh, type:

export PATH=/opt/cdwriter/bin:$PATH

cdwriter

If you are running (t)csh, type:

setenv PATH /opt/cdwriter/bin:$PATH

cdwriter
